Curatorial statement
Contemporary art is a very interesting subject. Throughout my time in art 122Y I have learned about several themes and components in contemporary art including body, place, identity, and more. After all the assignments and readings I felt that identity in art interested me the most. The idea of different factors leading to build a persons perception of identity and portrayal of identity in art fascinated me. Identity is so interesting because it shows who an artist is, and you can see who you are by your perception of identity. Our identity is what makes every person unique and different, but also brings groups of people together. Identity is definitely one of the most important elements of art. I will be looking into five different artists, and one piece of art by each of them. Each piece will be reviewed and the use of identity in each will be examined and discussed.
The first piece that will be discussed is 'Gestuario' by Antonio Martarell. This work is an installation of several prints depicting images of the silhouettes of common Puerto Rican people. I selected this work because at a glance I could tell the identity played a major role in the perception and creation of the piece.
The next piece I selected is 'Photography English' by Maki Miyashita. This piece is shows three photos of her bedroom, two of them include her too. I saw this piece and thought of how I relate myself strongly to my own bedroom. A bedroom is one type of room where you put a lot of yourself into, for you spend a lot of your time there and keep the things you hold closest to you there. I saw how closely a bedroom can mirror your identity, so I selected this piece for further examination.
The next piece I choose is 'Lost Identity' By Airi Pung. When I saw this piece I felt it was a perfect candidate for examining for Identity, The word identity is even in the name. This piece depicts a faceless woman in a Mona Lisa like setting and stance.
The last piece I chose is 'Steal U're Own Identity' by Sam Smith. This piece shows a bar code made from legs. I saw the possibility of how the artist could be making a statement on how technology and modern culture could be influencing our identity.
