"Steal U're Own Identity" By Sam Smith; 2006; Print
'Steal U're Own Identity' by Sam Smith is an image of a bar code made up of human legs. The piece is highly modern looking and makes a statement about technologies role in our Identity. Our lives are increasingly run by technology, from our smart phones to the internet. This artist is commenting on how if we continue integrating technology into our lives without caution we will end up losing our identity to it.
The image of a combination of human and technological elements is what gives the impression of a comment on our use of technology in our identity. We us social media such as facebook to show others who we are. We put our information online, our likes dislikes and feelings. We use our computers everyday to look up information and display ourselves to others. We are becoming almost dependent on technology for everything.
If we incorporate technology too much into ourselves we may lose our identity. As we use it more and more it becomes part of our identity. This is not a bad thing right now, for today we can use technology to help expand ourselves, but the artist is warning us that it may consume us. When we are consumed by facebook we are effectively stealing our own identity by choosing use it too much. If we can manage to separate but still use technology in our identities we will keep them.

"Sam Smith is a video and installation artist based in Berlin, Germany and Sydney, Australia. His practice integrates sculptural construction and moving image in an artistic critique of cinema’s apparatus.
